Defining autonomy in medical AI

The extent to which medical artificial intelligence (AI) is intended to be deployed autonomously is a critical aspect of its risk assessment, however the range of intended autonomy has not been explored or defined in a nuanced fashion. We therefore propose a risk-based model for levels of autonomy in medical AI to inform its regulation and clinical evaluation.
