AI in randomized clinical trials

In this systematic review, published in JAMA Network Open, we found that, despite over 50,000 articles published on AI and medicine over the past decade, only 41 randomized controlled trials have ever been published comparing AI/ML clinical tools against current standards of care. Of these trials, none adhered to all recommended AI clinical trial reporting guidelines (CONSORT-AI), and most did not enroll patients from underrepresented minority backgrounds. The study highlights the need for additional randomized trials in the AI space that incorporate transparency, reproducibility, and inclusivity.
